Shams Hirji is an associate at Elsberg, Baker & Maruri, where his practice spans the entire lifecycle of a case—from pleadings through trial and appeal. He has served on high-stakes trial teams, argued and won several appeals, and briefed challenging legal issues in both trial and appellate courts. Shams litigates across a broad spectrum of substantive areas, including trade secrets, breach-of-fiduciary-duty, statutory interpretation, and administrative law.
Shams earned his J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Shams served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable John B. Nalbandian of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and to the Honorable Douglas R. Cole of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Shams also served as a Deputy Solicitor General in the Office of the Ohio Solicitor General, where he represented the state of Ohio in federal and state appellate courts.

- Represented two former Jane Street traders in high-profile litigation brought by Jane Street, which alleged trade secret misappropriation and breach of IP agreements. Case was resolved on mutually agreeable terms.
- Representing stockholder in the Delaware Court of Chancery in breach-of-fiduciary duty action arising from squeeze-out merger.
- Representing blockchain technology company in breach of contract and Section 1782 proceedings.
- Won a reversal in the Sixth Circuit of the district court’s dismissal of a complaint on behalf of a major shipping company in a case arising under the Labor Management Relations Act.
- Won a reversal in the Ohio Court of Appeals of the trial court’s money judgment against a metals manufacturer.
- Won a writ of mandamus in a Florida District Court of Appeals on behalf of one of the country’s largest medical equipment manufacturers.
- Won an FLSA regulatory interpretation issue of first impression in the Sixth Circuit on behalf of the franchisee of a globally renown restaurant chain.
